MEET OUR INSTRUCTORS!Name: Lauren Fitzpatrick
RECC History: I am the RECC's Marketing & Sales Manager and have been teaching group fitness since 2023.
Why did you become a fitness instructor? I love sharing my passion for fitness with others and helping them realize their potential. I enjoy showing people that fitness doesn't have to be intimidating or something you have to do — it's something you get to do, and you can have fun while doing it!
What’s your favorite pump-up song? It changes on the daily. However if you put on any song from the 2000s era, I know it'll be a good workout.
How do you stay motivated to work out on days you don’t feel like it?I’m pretty in tune with my body and can usually tell the difference between when I truly need a rest day and when I’m just being lazy. If it’s the latter, I tell myself to just move for 10 minutes. If I’m still not feeling it after that, I’ll stop — but 99.9% of the time, I end up finishing the workout and never regret showing up for myself.
What advice would you give to someone just starting their fitness journey? Don’t compare yourself to anyone else’s journey. There will always be someone who’s stronger, leaner, has more time, or different genetics — but none of that matters. Focus on what you want to achieve, and take it one step at a time. Progress is personal, and consistency will always win.
If you could work out with any celebrity or athlete, who would it be and why?
I would love to workout with Whitney Simmons. She radiates such positive energy and makes fitness feel fun and empowering. I love how real she is about the ups and downs, and I feel like training with her would be equal parts challenging and uplifting. She'd be the ultimate hype girl.
Name: Joel Taylor
RECC History: My 10 year anniversary as a RECC staff is October of 2025. I started teaching the "RAW" class in 2016! Wow 9 years! I've worked as front desk staff, and then sponsorship manager while also teaching "War".
Why did you become a fitness instructor? I taught kids Karate in my 20's and later I taught cardio kickboxing. I enjoy encouraging others to push themselves out of their comfort zone to help them achieve more than they might on their own.
What’s your favorite pump-up song? Sandstorm, yes I'm that old.
How do you stay motivated to work out on days you don’t feel like it? By understanding that you are going to not feel like it more than you are... you have to have faith that you will feel better after the workout. You will like who you are after you do the work.
What advice would you give to someone just starting their fitness journey? To break it down into small steps. The best advice I heard was "Stop getting worse". Maintain and then start to build your fitness.
If you could work out with any celebrity or athlete, who would it be and why? David Goggins. Because he is a master of using mindset to break through self imposed limitations. Name: Nik Phillips
Why did you become a fitness instructor? I’ve always been passionate about health and wellbeing. Over time, I’ve learned how fitness builds a strong, resilient body and mind—and I became a fitness instructor to share that in a fun, no-judgemental way. Whether it’s grooving in Dance Rhythm at the RECC or pushing limits in functional fitness, my goal is to help others appreciate and enjoy their own strength. Why not move, sweat, and have a laugh along the way!
What’s your favourite pump-up song?
For weights: HUMBLE - kendrick Lamar
Dance: Pump it - Dj Gbr
Group fitness: Astronaut in the ocean - Masked Wolf
How do you stay motivated to work out on days you don’t feel like it? The struggle is real—but 9 times out of 10, once I hit the gym floor, I know it’s my time. And for that 1 out of 10, I take a rest day, and that’s okay too!
What advice would you give to someone just starting their fitness journey? It’s a journey, not a destination—so take your time! Learn to move correctly to build confidence, prioritise rest days, and never skip the stretch. Your body will thank you!
If you could work out with any celebrity or athlete, who would it be and why? Either Canadian Crossfitter Jeffrey Adler.Or American Fitness Trainer Steve Cook. Both are incredible athletes with top skills and abilities. I’d love to learn their tricks and hear their insights into fitness. But I’d definitely want to workout with Kristina Girod - a deadly spin instructor with sick tracks.
Name: Heidi Barbrick
Why did you become a fitness instructor? kind of fell into it. I was going to a local gym after recovering from back surgery, and they were offering the first Zumba classes east of Toronto. No one had ever really heard of it, but it sounded fun, so I gave it a go. Before long, I was attending so many classes that the owner asked if I would consider getting certified. She and I attended our B1 certification together shortly after. I have never looked back. After that, it just snowballed, and I now hold certifications in Aqua Zumba, Zumba Toning, Zumba for Kids, Strong Nation and Circl.
What’s your favourite pump-up song? That's a hard one! It changes by the day. Lately I'm grooving to Greyhound by Swedish House Mafia, but it really isn't well suited to Zumba. I like finding banging remixes of old 80's music and 70's funk. I may be dating myself here...lol. I love the traditional Latin rhythms that form the basis of Zumba. Each one has its own unique style and flavor.
How do you stay motivated to work out on days you don’t feel like it? Truly, my participants motivate me. There are just no other folks on earth like Zumba folks. To see them make gains in their strength, balance and mobility is food for the soul. The pure energy exchange in my classes is a phenomenon. After all, what could be better than starting the day dancing with your friends? It's mental health care wrapped up in a big sweaty bow.
What advice would you give to someone just starting their fitness journey? Set reasonable goals. Find an exercise format that you can feel passionate about, and that you love to do. Find community in your exercise journey; having a tribe keeps you motivated, and accountable.
If you could work out with any celebrity or athlete, who would it be and why? I've never been a big sports fan; I don't have any 'idols' so to speak, but it would probably be a hoot to dance with Beto Perez, the founder of Zumba.Name: Adrian Betts
RECC History: I started as Health and Wellness Manager in July 2024. Before that I was a member.
Why did you become a fitness instructor? I really want to see people live their best lives. Life is not a dress rehearsal, and I really want people to live to their full potential.
What’s your favorite pump-up song? Any dance beats like Adam Beyer. I love a good heavy bass track!!!
How do you stay motivated to work out on days you don’t feel like it? To be honest, it's just a habit now. I know, habit trumps motivation. Once you develop the habit, then you can still workout even with no motivation.
What advice would you give to someone just starting their fitness journey? Focus on the journey and the process rather than the outcome. The outcome will arrive but is always changing. The journey is where we can develop habits and the enjoyment of the process.
If you could work out with any celebrity or athlete, who would it be and why? Probably someone like Nathan Fa'avae. He is one of the best Adventure Racers around, and has been dominating the sport for years.Name: Celene Bartlett

What advice would you give to someone just starting their fitness journey? Create a good why. Remember are choosing your fitness journey. It’s not something you HAVE to do, it’s something you are blessed to be able to do. Tell someone you trust and who will help keep accountable. A coach is never a bad investment

Why did you become a fitness instructor? Someone else taught group fitness, and it changed my life. The community that group exercise builds is powerful—it gave me the confidence and interest to learn about and implement a healthier lifestyle. I discovered a love for moving my body and have been inspired to keep exploring fun, new ways to stay active.
I also fell hard for spin—I love being on the bike, leading the room, creating playlists and choreography that get people fired up. It’s one of my favourite ways to move, and I wanted to share that energy with others. Becoming an instructor was my way of giving back to the community that gave so much to me. If I can inspire even one person to take a step toward a healthier lifestyle, that’s a win in my book.
What’s your favourite pump-up song?I can’t pick just one! Here are a few go-tos: Spaceman by Hardwell, Armageddon by Dr. Fresch, Wet by Wax Motif, and Get Loose by Lil Jon.
How do you stay motivated to work out on days you don’t feel like it? The key is understanding that motivation isn’t always going to be there—and that’s okay. It’s about replacing motivation with dedication. You can’t control how you feel every day, but you can control your effort.
What advice would you give to someone just starting their fitness journey? Start by finding something you enjoy! Explore different ways of moving your body until you find what lights you up. And remember: consistency beats perfection. Progress isn’t linear, and that’s totally normal. Be patient, be kind to yourself, and keep going.
If you could work out with any celebrity or athlete, who would it be and why? LeBron James. He’s an absolute beast of an athlete, and I’d love to get a behind-the-scenes look at how he trains and recovers. Name: Chrisane Delano
Why did you become a fitness instructor?Because fitness, for me, is one of the most powerful forms of self-care. Moving your body is a way to show up for yourself—physically, mentally, emotionally. I became an instructor because I wanted to help people carve out that time, even if it's just 30 minutes, where they can focus on them. No distractions, no pressure—just movement, sweat, and feeling stronger than when you walked in. Watching people grow in confidence and realize they can do hard things? That’s everything.
What’s your favorite pump-up song? Right now? I’m all about the Big Bootie Mix on Spotify. There are a number of volumes you can listen to. It’s upbeat, high-energy, and there are zero breaks in the music, which keeps the momentum going from start to finish. It’s the perfect blend of variety and hype—it hits every genre and keeps you guessing. Honestly, it’s such a vibe you might forget you’re working out. Come to my class and check it out for yourself!
How do you stay motivated to work out on days you don’t feel like it? I remind myself that movement doesn’t always have to be intense—it just has to happen. On the days I’m not feeling it, I shift my mindset to “just move.” Once I start, the energy usually kicks in. And let’s be real—I'm leading others, so I want to show up the same way I ask them to. Consistency over perfection, always.
What advice would you give to someone just starting their fitness journey? Give yourself grace, and stay consistent. You don’t have to crush every workout—you just have to keep showing up. Don’t be afraid to modify, ask questions, or try different styles until you find what lights you up. And remember: everyone starts somewhere. It’s not about doing it perfectly, it’s about doing it your way.Name: Jen

RECC History: I have always been a member but started teaching classes in 2025.
Why did you become a fitness instructor? I became a fitness instructor because I fell in love with group fitness after the Pandemic. I started taking spin classes at the RECC, and before that, I had always been intimidated by the gym—I didn’t know how to set up my own routine or where to start. But in those classes, I found a fun, social, and structured way to stay active. The instructors were not only inspiring but also became genuine friends, and that sense of community made all the difference. Seeing how much of a positive impact they had on me, I knew this was something I wanted to be a part of. Becoming an instructor felt like the perfect way to give back and help others find that same joy in movement.
What’s your favorite pump-up song? I love a girl pop remix. Taylor, Gracie, Selena, Charli, Chappell. It’s the perfect mix of energy, attitude, and fun—exactly what I love in a workout track!
How do you stay motivated to work out on days you don’t feel like it? Group fitness classes make it easier to stay committed, even on days I don’t feel like working out. Each class and instructor offers a unique energy, plus it's social and having friends in class helps keep me accountable. But it’s also okay to rest or adjust a workout when you need to. Finding that balance is key!
What advice would you give to someone just starting their fitness journey? Just start! Begin with something you know you’ll enjoy, and as you make progress, don’t be afraid to try something new—you’ll probably surprise yourself! Set realistic, attainable goals that keep you motivated, and find a community that inspires you. For me, that was group fitness. Most importantly, take the time to acknowledge your successes along the way!

How do you stay motivated to work out on days you don’t feel like it? On days when motivation is low, I remind myself how great I’ll feel afterward. I know I’ll have more energy and a clearer mind once I finish my workout. Sometimes, all it takes is putting on my workout gear and getting out the door to snap me into it and once I’m at the gym it's easy to keep going!
What advice would you give to someone just starting their fitness journey? My advice is consistency over perfection. If you can create a habit of going to the gym and staying active, you’ll be setting yourself up for a lifetime of health. Humans are creatures of habit, and the more you make fitness a regular part of your routine, the easier it will become. Progress is built over time, and consistency is key.
